Launch: Better Blog Comments for Shopify
Advanced spam protection, comment replies, email notifications, and much more in my newest Shopify app for blogs.
I'm excited to release my third Shopify app, Better Blog Comments.
Shopify’s blog feature has always sort of sucked.
I’ve felt this first hand over my many years doing freelance Shopify work, and then even more so when I released my second Shopify app Recipe Kit.
After years of hearing complaints about the native blog comment feature, I finally decided to take the plunge and spend some time building a better solution. Originally it was just an add-on to the Recipe Kit app, but after giving it a bit of a test run, I decided to make it a standalone app as I realized it would be useful for the grander (non-recipe) Shopify community, as well.
There are apps that fully replace the Shopify blog, which works for some people, but I think that is overkill for most. The native Shopify blog is nicely integrated in the admin, and natively supported by all themes - so it is a great thing to enable for new stores keen to try content marketing or just updating their customers on a regular basis.
Why Shopify’s native comment feature is missing the mark
There is a laundry list of things that Shopify’s native blog is missing:
- Actual spam prevention (anyone with a Shopify blog knows how many bot comments come in)
- No email notifications (aka, you never know when someone commented)
- No replying to comments (meaning back-and-forth communication is basically impossible)
- No ratings / reviews (so )
- and so many more.
Just look at the Shopify Community forum threads complaining about the lack of features / usability of the native blog, and you’ll start to see the picture.
How is Better Blog Comments better?
I’ve essentially just made Shopify’s native blog comment feature better.
Really good spam & bot prevention
With an extensive spam blacklist, detailed spam reporting based on IP and email addresses, and an optional Cloudflare Turnstile integration to enable a CAPTCHA for spam/bot prevention.
Email notifications and reply-from-email
Instant email notifications for new comments, and extremely easy replying to comments by simply replying to the email. 1 click approval, spam, and deletion via email coming soon.
Threaded conversations in the comment section
Not only can you, as the store owner, reply to comments, but other users can reply to comments, too. Meaning your blog post comment section will turn into a lively hub for conversation.
Ratings / reviews for your recipes, guides
Whether your blog post is a recipe, a DIY guide, or just a useful post that readers could find use seeing a rating for, I’ve got you covered. Ratings turn your blog comments into a review section, which means fantastic user generated content to show up in search results with little effort.
Actual, consistent updates from a small team
This is low hanging fruit, I know. But Shopify is notorious for not updating core features / apps very often. In fact, they just removed their native Product Reviews app, which caused quite a bit of a stir and many problems for many merchants.
But Better Blog Comments is my app, so I can update it whenever I want, and I can release a new version whenever I want (which is going to be very consistently).
